Suffering from New Positionitis?

Change can bring feelings of overwhelm and cause that deer in the headlight look.

If you have recently been promoted,

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Take a moment to pat yourself on the back.  Your promotion was NOT GUARANTEED! It was a result of your hard work, dedicated effort and determination to do your job well.

GOOD FOR YOU!

DO NOT BRUSH THIS MOMENT OFF!

REVEL IN IT!

GRIN FROM EAR TO EAR AND SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOF TOPS IF YOU FEEL SO INCLINED!!

Okay, enough of that, time to get down to business.   Kidding…not really!

Swirling thoughts, wild emotion, excited adrenalin rush, sweaty palms, doubts and fears are all normal reactions, so chill.

JUST BREATHE and know that you are skilled, talented and THEY chose you for this job because of it.

A few suggestions while you transition.

PATIENCE! You will not solve every challenge, come up with fabulous new ideas and processes in a day.

Make sure you have a clear understanding of the new job description and your boss’s expectation of how you’ll perform in it.

Once you have that, write a list of any information or support you need and questions you need to ask to clarify your role. THEN GET CLARITY!!  Speak up and make sure your needs are met.

DO NOT BE AFRAID to ask questions. Expect answers and if they don’t make sense, ask again.

DO NOT ASSUME anything!

Take the time to chat with each person on your team. Ask for patience while you get up to speed on them and their needs.

Play the newbie card!  You are new to this position and no one expects you to have it mastered in the next week, so relax. When we see the sign at the bank that says “teller in training” or the grocery store “cashier in training” we are automatically more understanding and accepting of any delays. Your team will be understanding if you ask them to be patient while you settle in.

You can do this.

Believe it. THEY DO!
